From the Principal

Among my pastimes outside School, lies a fondness for YouTube and, particularly, videos which reflect some of my wider interests - the algorithmic suggestions of my eclectic interests include past episodes from the golden age of 'I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue', Anglican hymnody, classic documentaries [including Hannah Hauxwell and Fred Dibnah], video repair manuals for Land Rover Defenders, and gun dog training. Among the latter, I follow a particular trainer with the catch phrase of 'you get out what you put in'. There have been at least two events this week which have testified to the reward which can be achieved with significant effort.

House Music was, as ever, impressive; the part and unison songs entirely the products of selection by pupils, practices organised by pupils, pupils rehearsed by pupils, and performances conducted and delivered by pupils. The quality of the final performances make these points all the more significant. Wednesday's performances by all six Houses were a wonderful showcase of musical talent but also collective effort, community and house spirit. Whilst there can clearly only be one victor, all pupils are to be commended on what they achieved, and particular congratulations go to Poole House, under William M.'s leadership, on achieving first place.

Equally, last night's Evensong to commemorate the life of Thomas, Cardinal Langley, Bishop of Durham who re-endowed the School in 1414 was a stunning service, sung by both the Cathedral and Chapel choirs. We are grateful to the Dean and Chapter for providing this opportunity to contribute to worship and to mark this Langley's contribution to the School. Next weekend sees, of course, the Advent Procession perhaps one of the most beautiful services in the calendar of cathedral services.

This evening sees the first XV play Barnard Castle at the Darlington Arena [Mowden Park!] and please note that tomorrow's Hockey fixtures have been postponed. I offer my best wishes for the weekend.
