From the Principal

The half term draws to a close with our traditional Abbey Service in the Cathedral and then a few hours later, the showpiece event of the Summer – Speech Day. It is an event I always look forward to as I enjoy the opportunity to reward the successes of our pupils on such a grand stage. The awards being presented tonight span the full range of achievement in the school, from academic excellence, effort through the year, sporting prowess, public speaking and musical talent. And while pupils might grumble about having to stay late on a Friday night, I know they also enjoy the opportunity to congratulate their peers.

This was in evidence on Monday morning when I was able to present the new monitor team with their emblems of office – a tie or a scarf – and they were applauded with enthusiasm. Equally rousing was the applause given to the unprecedented number of winners of certificates for the Junior Maths Challenge. It was a real pleasure (particularly so as I am a Maths teacher) to hand out over 50 Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates to pupils in Years 7 and 8. Some exceptional Year 6 pupils will have received theirs at Chorister School assembly. The ambition shown by those receiving a tie, a scarf or a certificate was matched by the kindness of those looking on - our MARK values writ large.

So I look forward to seeing you all this evening and joining with you in celebrating achievements of all kinds, and enjoying being part of such a special community where everyone is able to thrive and achieve in their own way.

To the pupils: have a good break, and come back for Exam Week ready to perform!

With best wishes, Andrew
