The Caffinites
Friday, 9 May 2025

There seems to be a very discrete amount of leaving this week, and not a great deal of fuss or noise has been made, but our two exam groups leave us at various points. Alongside this, the Year 11 Caffinites went on study leave on Wednesday, though they are still attending some lessons; exams have begun, starting with English Literature on Monday morning.

Our Year 13 pupils came in on their last day today and went to the 'slides' near old private side to carry on a special Caffinites tradition, which for me seems very unique to this special House. As with a countless number of Caffinite Year 13s before them, they carved their names in the wooden walls that line the corridor in the highest part of the House. I've been privileged to watch this happen 12 times and every year it seems to move the most unmovable Year 13 boy.

In addition, the nostalgic note, house and sports photographs took place on Wednesday this week and again, there were some that won't be returning and as a result will be their final chance to be together as a House.

The cricket season has benefited from the very dry weather we have had (I'm no cricketer, but Mr Hughes assures me it's good for the wicket). From my office, I have heard the usual noise of the wheels from the cricket bags with boys coming down the drive and it seems that many of our younger Caffinites and boys in Year 9 have benefited from the extra games. Despite a loss against Manchester on Tuesday, the boys are in high spirits.

Good luck to all those representing the School in fixtures this weekend and a nod to the rowers who start the sprint season at Durham City Regatta.
