Wellbeing - What is Exam Stress and its Causes?
Friday, 4 April 2025

As we approach the summer term, it's important to acknowledge that exam stress can be particularly challenging for our students. With both GCSE and A Level public exams starting soon, as well as Year 7-10 groups beginning to prepare for their internal exams, the pressure can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, we want to reassure you that with the right support, exam stress can be well-managed and turned into a positive learning experience.

This week, our tutors have been focusing on helping students recognise the signs and effects of exam stress. We've been using Childline, an invaluable online resource, to guide students on how to self-manage their stress levels and understand when it's time to seek help. By empowering students with these tools, we aim to create a supportive environment where they feel equipped to handle the pressures of exams.

During exam season, students may display a variety of signs of stress, both physically and emotionally. Common physical symptoms include headaches, trouble sleeping, fatigue, or changes in appetite. Emotionally, students might feel overwhelmed, anxious, or experience mood swings, which can affect their behaviour and concentration. Some may become more withdrawn or show signs of irritability, while others may struggle with feelings of self-doubt or fear of failure. It's important to recognise these signs early as a parent, as they can indicate that the pressure is becoming too much for your child to manage on their own. Being attentive to these changes can help ensure they receive the support they need to navigate the challenges of exam season early.

Your support is crucial in helping your child manage their well-being during this challenging period; you know them the best. Whether it's offering a listening ear, creating a calm study environment, or helping them balance study time with relaxation, your involvement can make all the difference. Together, we can ensure that our students feel supported, confident, and ready to succeed in their exams.
