Understanding Microaggressions: A Key Component of Emotional and Social Learning Microaggressions are subtle, often unintentional, comments or behaviours that convey negative stereotypes or biases toward a person or group. These remarks or actions, though seemingly small, can have a lasting impact on a student's mental health and self-esteem. Examples include making assumptions about someone's abilities based on their background or using language that dismisses their identity. While microaggressions are often overlooked or misunderstood, they contribute to a climate of exclusion and marginalisation that can be detrimental to a student's wellbeing. Incorporating the concept of microaggressions into a balanced program with a tutor is essential in fostering a well-rounded education. By helping students recognise and understand microaggressions, tutors can create a safe and inclusive learning environment that promotes empathy and respect. This awareness allows students to better navigate diverse social settings, interact with peers from various backgrounds, and build stronger, more meaningful relationships. Addressing microaggressions head-on also empowers students to advocate for themselves and others when they encounter these harmful behaviours. Ultimately, teaching students about microaggressions contributes to their emotional intelligence and social awareness. It not only enhances their ability to succeed academically but also prepares them to become compassionate and responsible members of society. By integrating this critical topic into our tutoring sessions, students will hopefully develop the skills to challenge harmful behaviours and create a more inclusive, respectful world for everyone. |
