Wellbeing - Plastic Waste
Saturday, 30 November 2024

This week, our tutor group discussions have focused on the growing issue of plastic pollution and its devastating impact on the planet. Students were shocked to learn that 60% of the plastic waste in the River Thames is single-use, and they reflected on how such waste accumulates in our waterways and oceans. The discussion extended to the wider global impact on the stunning islands of Bali, where the iconic blue seas are increasingly marred by plastic debris, threatening marine life and the delicate ecosystem. Researchers predict that by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in our oceans.

Even more concerning is the infiltration of microplastics into our food chain, a stark reminder of how deeply plastic pollution affects all of us. These discussions prompted thoughtful conversations about how students and their families can make small but meaningful changes at home, such as reducing single-use plastics, recycling more effectively, and rethinking everyday habits to protect the planet's future. What will the world look like to them in another 50 years time? Will they be the next generation to solve this spiralling global problem?

Next week, we're excited to build on this awareness with the launch of a Life & Wellbeing Education House competition. This initiative will challenge students to get creative and make a tangible difference. Stay tuned for more details—together, we can inspire positive action for a healthier planet!
