Pimlico House
Friday, 8 November 2024

Given that the week began with Guy Fawkes and continued with Trump, Politics has certainly been in the air. Exchanges within Pimlico walls have been engaging and I have been impressed with the level of interest that our older girls, particularly, have shown in the events from across the pond. The division of a nation, the polarisation of views, the methods of campaign and the future of democracy have been hot topics and have generated a torrent of chatter as girls and staff have gathered around the sofas or matrons' toasters. Some were even fortunate enough to attend a talk given by the Chancellor of the University, Fiona Hill, about the American elections.

However, it was when one particular student from year 13 admitted to feeling "burdened" by her education, that the conversation took another interesting turn. I understood exactly what she meant: Ignorance is bliss, of course! We are educated to think; to think is to influence; to influence carries responsibility; responsibility requires moral thinking and doing the right thing ain't always easy! We talked about the small things we can do that make a difference and the importance of not giving up on right thinking, even in the face of overwhelming global events. We also parted with the agreement to stay cheerful since this is the courageous response to not always feeling so.

Cake then, came just at the right point! What better way to bring cheer than the beautiful, colourful, firework-themed cakes that arrived in Pimlico this morning? Thank you so much to those who put themselves out for our fundraising effort. It is noted and much appreciated. Girls, boys and staff have enjoyed them very much and I'm sure Grace House will be happy too, once we put the proceeds on our fundraising page. On other news, Josephine M. was awarded our Friday celebration today. She is, as far as I know, the only cornet player Pimlico has seen (at least in our memory) and she took her grade 5 exam yesterday. I, and her friend Clementine, were even graced with an impromptu concert yesterday as she practised for her exam. It was wonderful! Thank you, Josephine.

As we head into the weekend, I urge all girls to practise the House song as per Matilda's direction. Words are no longer the focus and girls need to memorise the other details that Matilda has explained. I hope you enjoy hearing more music from showers and bedrooms as your daughters take on this challenge!

Finally, and as I'm sure you already know, the House music competition on 18th November will end at 21.15. If you would like to arrange collection directly from the Cathedral then please could you let either Mrs. Pollard or me know? The House will close to day pupils at 21.30. Thank you.
