World Food Day
Friday, 18 October 2024

World Food Day, observed on October 16th, is a global event that aims to raise awareness about hunger, food insecurity, and the significance of sustainable food systems. At Durham School, the tutors on the Senior site have taken the opportunity to engage students in meaningful discussions about the importance of this event. Working closely with our catering operators, Chartwells, we have been able to bring these issues to the forefront, emphasising how responsible food consumption and waste reduction can make a tangible difference in the global fight against hunger.

Chartwells, with their strong commitment to sustainability, has been instrumental in promoting a culture of food waste reduction within our school, by implementing measures to minimise waste in our dining hall. This partnership reinforces the message that responsible food practices are not just about individual choices, but also about supporting global efforts to ensure food availability for everyone.

Educating students about food shortages in other countries is a crucial part of this discussion. Many children may not be fully aware of the struggles faced by millions worldwide who do not have enough to eat. By introducing them to the concept of food insecurity and the disparities between different regions, we can foster empathy and a sense of responsibility. Understanding the scale of the problem helps students see why food waste is not just a local issue but a global one that requires collective action and conscious behaviour.

At Durham School, teaching about food issues is about more than just facts, it's about cultivating responsible global citizens who are aware of their impact on the world. Through discussions around World Food Day and our collaboration with Chartwells, we are helping our students connect their daily choices with larger societal issues. By encouraging them to think critically about the food they consume and waste, we empower them to become part of the solution to global hunger, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future. We hope you will continue your own discussion around this topic either in the kitchen or at the supermarket.
